New board appointments at Edinburgh Leisure

New board appointments at Edinburgh Leisure

As a charity, which runs over 50 sports and leisure facilities across the Scottish capital, we have made some new board appointments, which became effective from January 2021.

Scott Haldane was appointed as Edinburgh Leisure’s new Chairperson, taking over from David Milne, who stepped down after two terms (six years). Jackie Moran was appointed as Vice-Chair.

Haldane has served on the Edinburgh Leisure Board for eight years and previously held the position of Vice-Chair, and also chairs the Strategy and Financial Planning Committee. Moran has been on the Board for six years and chairs the Audit and Risk Committee.

David Milne, who officially relinquished his position as Chair in January said:  “As someone with a passion for sport and the benefits it can bring to so many people, I have been honoured to have held the position of Chair of Edinburgh Leisure for the last six years.

“I have enjoyed meeting many members of staff over the years, visiting the venues, and seeing the positive impact that Edinburgh Leisure has had on the health of so many people of all ages and stages.

“Covid-19 has changed all our lives but I have been proud of the way that the organisation, and more importantly its key asset – its staff – has weathered the storm, pulling together despite the uncertainties and the ever-changing environment, to re-open venues and services, creating opportunities for everyone to lead more active, and healthy lives.”

Scott Haldane commenting on his appointment said: “Having been a member of the Edinburgh Leisure Board for the last eight years, I feel privileged to be asked to extend my contribution in the capacity as Chair. My goal is to build on the excellent work of my predecessors to further enhance Edinburgh Leisure's role in supporting and promoting the health and wellbeing of the people of Edinburgh."

On her appointment, Jackie Moran said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed as Vice Chair of Edinburgh Leisure. I look forward to working with the board and the leadership team in my new role.

June Peebles, CEO – Edinburgh Leisure said:  “A key element of Edinburgh Leisure’s governance is having a non-executive Board of Directors, who have the collective responsibility of directing Edinburgh Leisure, ensuring we operate in accordance with our Memorandum and Articles of Association and meet all our legal responsibilities.  The Board give their time and expertise on a voluntary basis to support the Strategic Leadership Team in leading the organisation.

“We’re so fortunate to work with these Board of Directors, who come from a variety of industries, business and specialisms and give their time and business brains willingly, scrutinising our work to ensure we deliver on our vision and objectives.

“I’d like to extend a huge thank you to David for his professionalism, advice and enthusiasm over the years and in particular, the support and commitment he has given to me and Edinburgh Leisure, in what has been the most challenging year for everyone.”

With the First Minister’s announcement on 20th December 2020 that Level 4 measures would be applied to all of mainland Scotland, Edinburgh Leisure’s indoor venues were not able to re-open as planned on 27th December.

However, we welcome the First Minister’s most recent announcement and the easing of restrictions. For Edinburgh Leisure this currently means:

Leisure centres will open for individual exercise on the 26th of April, including gyms, swimming pools, indoor court hire, racquet sports and children's coaching. This is pending a government announcement on the 20th of April.

  • Our golf courses remain open (weather permitting).
  • Our outdoor tennis courts remain open (weather permitting).
  • From the 5th of April, contact sports have resumed for 12-17-year-olds.
  • From the 19th of April, community access to high school sports facilities will restart with access to outdoor pitches.
  • We will continue live-streaming fitness classes, with membership and pay-as-you-go options available.

Please bear with us and continue to check our website as we work through these changes. We are looking forward to bringing them into force as we work towards reopening.

-Ends-

About Edinburgh Leisure

Edinburgh Leisure is a charity on a mission to help people lead healthier, happier, more active lives. We are committed to creating opportunities for everyone to get active and stay active by running over 50 sport and leisure venues. We support local people to move more, and annually we receive around 5 million visits to their venues.  As a charity, we don’t make a profit and surpluses are used to maintain and improve facilities, as well as support our Active Communities programme.

We are uniquely placed to draw upon our expertise and provide access to leisure centres, activities, and support through our Active Communities programme, which uses physical activity and sport to make a positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing.
